Position: Prevention Specialist

Location: Santa Rosa, CA

Reports To: Prevention Department Manager

Status: Nonexempt, part-time (20-25 hours/week)

Salary: $25/hour (eligible for $1/hour bilingual pay differential)

Summary: The Prevention Specialist provides advocacy to clients and prevention education outreach for youth and adults. The Prevention Specialist will work with schools and community groups as well as facilitate and develop curricula serving K-12 students, incarcerated and probation youth, and adults.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create, schedule, and present relevant presentations to parent groups, schools in Sonoma County, Juvenile Hall, and other community organizations.
  • Plan and execute outreach to Sonoma County communities.
  • Assist Prevention Manager in training of department volunteers/interns.
  • Act as a representative of Verity in various community settings and coalition partnerships.
  • Provide advocacy and crisis intervention support to clients on both Verity’s 24/7 crisis line, SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) accompaniments, and RCC (Redwood Children’s Center) accompaniments as needed.
  • Attend webinars and conferences as needed.
  • Create and distribute content such as blogs, infographics, videos on social media.
  • Record and input data into Verity’s database systems for reporting purposes.
  • Submit and organize data and reports on outreach and presentations as needed.
  • Collect and compile statistics for prevention programs and provide monthly/quarterly/yearly reports in a timely fashion.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

  • Availability to travel intermittently within California; have a car, insurance, and a valid driver’s license.

 

Education and Skills 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent job training.
  • Must complete a California rape crisis center sexual assault victim counselor training upon hire, if not already completed.
  • Completion of Prevention Specialist Training.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and facilitation skills.
  • Preference: Fluent in Spanish and English preferred (bilingual pay differential available)

  • Ability to pass agency criminal background check and juvenile detention background check.

 

 

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to work at a desk/computer in a shared workspace for several hours at a time; bending and/or lifting up to 20 pounds, grasping; capacity to navigate two-story building via stairs; specific vision abilities include close and peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment; work environment represents those an employee encounters while working in an office workspace environment, attending a tabling public event, other outreach project sites and presentations. Additional specific physical demands may include:

  • Carry essential materials for tabling and outreach events, including a canopy, chairs, tables, pamphlets, prizes/swag, and a tablecloth.
  • Responsible for both setting up and cleaning up after tabling events.
  • Be prepared to walk a few blocks, depending on the event and parking location.
  • Bring coloring books for presentations at elementary schools.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This role offers flexibility, allowing for both onsite and remote work based on the incumbent’s workload and daily schedule. Some days may require office coverage, while on others, work may need to be conducted from various locations within the community. Additionally, flexibility during evenings and weekends is required, although it may not be a consistent occurrence.

 

Travel
Work-related travel is necessary within the county during business hours, involving commuting to and from schools, organizations, and teen centers. As a result, reliable transportation is essential. Personal vehicles must be utilized for commuting and transporting outreach materials. Occasionally, there may be conferences out of the county or state, depending on the specific grant under which the work is conducted.
